Wire Your Fan
In this Article: Single Wall Switch Wiring | Dual Wall Switch Wiring
NOTE: If you do not feel comfortable wiring your Hunter Fan, please contact a certified electrician.
The wiring instructions for your new Hunter Fan differ slightly based on the type of wall switch and your fan’s control system (pull chain, remote control, etc.). A single wall switch controls the power to the fan and light together, whereas a dual wall switch has two separate switches – one for the fan and the other for the light.
NOTE: An existing wall dimmer switch must be replaced with a single ON/OFF wall switch before installing a Hunter Fan to ensure consistent power flow from the switch to the fan. You cannot operate a ceiling fan with a wall dimmer switch.

1. Identify the wires coming from your ceiling fan rated electrical box, ceiling bracket, and your Hunter Ceiling Fan:
Fan Wires
- Black – Ungrounded
- Blue – Ungrounded
- White – Grounded
- Green/Yellow – Grounded
Ceiling Bracket Wires
- Bare Copper, Green or Green/Yellow – Grounded
Ceiling Fan Rated Electrical Box Wires
The wire colors coming from your ceiling may differ from those listed below. Contact a certified electrician if you need assistance.
- Black – Ungrounded
- Red – Ungrounded (this wire is for dual switch applications only)
- White – Grounded
- Green/Yellow – Grounded
2. Locate the orange wire nuts found in the hardware bag with the star on it. These twist-on connectors are used to fasten the bare-metal ends of the wires together by turning them clockwise until tight.
3. Use a wire nut to connect each of the following based on your fan’s control system:
Standard Pull Chain fan (no control)
- Connect the three grounding wires (green, green/yellow stripe, or bare copper) coming from the ceiling fan-rated electrical box, the downrod attached to your fan, and the ceiling bracket.
- Connect the white wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan.
- Connect the black wire from the ceiling to the black and blue wires from the fan.
Integrated Control
- Connect the three grounding wires (green, green/yellow stripe, or bare copper) coming from the ceiling fan-rated electrical box, the downrod attached to your fan, and the ceiling bracket.
- Connect the white wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan.
- Connect the black wire from the ceiling to the black wire from the fan.
- Cap the blue wire coming from the fan by itself with a wire nut as it is not needed when wiring for a single wall switch.
Canopy Mounted Control
- Connect the three grounding wires (green, green/yellow stripe, or bare copper) coming from the ceiling fan-rated electrical box, the downrod attached to your fan, and the ceiling bracket.
- Connect the three white wires from the ceiling, fan, and receiver together.
- Connect the black wire from the ceiling to the black wire from the receiver.
- Connect the blue wire from the fan to the blue wire from the receiver.
- Connect the black wire from the fan to the yellow wire from the receiver.
All wires, even if not connected to another wire, should now be capped with a wire nut.
- Turn all the wire nuts upward and push the wires up into the ceiling electrical box, being careful to place the ungrounded wires on one side of the box and all remaining wires on the other side.

- Connect a black wire from the ceiling to the black wire from the fan.
- Connect the second black or red wire coming from the ceiling to the blue wire coming from the fan.
- Connect a black wire from the ceiling to the black wire from the fan.
- Connect the second black or red wire coming from the ceiling to the blue wire coming from the fan.
Canopy Mounted Control
NOTE: You can install a canopy mounted control fan on a dual switch system however, the second switch will no longer function.

Power On
Once your fan is installed, turn the power to the switch back on and test your fan’s speed, direction, and light using the supplied remote control or pull-chains.
If your fan uses a remote control system, be sure the batteries are properly installed in the remote control.
